Bose is adding Bluetooth LE Audio support to its second-generation QuietComfort Ultra wireless headphones in a firmware update. Version 10.12.12 for the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) introduces support for the LC3 codec as part of that mode, which is available on compatible Android and Windows devices.
The update also adds 5.1 spatial audio with head tracking on compatible Android devices.
For wired listening over USB-C, it improves gaming and voice audio quality when the headphones are connected to a compatible PC or mobile device. The update also improves USB compatibility when the headphones are used with web-conferencing applications.
The firmware is distributed through the Bose app. The transfer from the connected device to the headphones can take up to 40 minutes, and the connection must be maintained throughout that stage. After the transfer has finished, installation of the firmware on the headphones can take a further 15 minutes.
