Topping launches Mini 500 Class D amplifier at $229

The Topping Mini 500 is a passive-speaker amplifier with selectable stereo and mono operation. Analogue inputs include RCA, balanced XLR and 6.35mm TRS, while volume control can be handled on the amplifier or by an upstream component.

Topping has launched the Mini 500 speaker amplifier through its official store. The Class D amplifier for passive speakers costs $229 and is rated at 220 watts per channel into 4 ohms in stereo at under 1% total harmonic distortion plus noise (THD+N).

The amplifier offers selectable stereo or mono operation, with two units required for a stereo system using mono mode. Mono output is rated at 450 watts into 2 ohms at under 1% THD+N, or 240 watts into 4 ohms at a 1% THD+N limit. At a 10% THD+N limit, the advertised outputs are 250 watts per channel into 4 ohms in stereo and up to 500 watts into 2 ohms in mono.

Analogue sources connect through stereo RCA, balanced XLR or 6.35mm TRS inputs, with a front-panel switch selecting between balanced and RCA connections. The front-panel volume knob adjusts listening level in VOL mode. BYPASS mode fixes the amplifier at maximum gain for use when another component handles volume. Suitable sources include CD players, streamers and DACs with analogue outputs.

A laptop or phone requires a DAC or another device with an analogue output to feed the amplifier. A turntable requires a built-in or separate phono preamplifier. The speaker terminals accept banana plugs, bare wire or spade connectors. A 12V trigger input allows compatible upstream equipment to control power switching.

The Mini 500 has an aluminium case measuring 190 × 164 × 44mm and weighs 1.09kg. A power adapter is included, and the amplifier is offered with power-plug options for several regions.
