VOID has introduced a loudspeaker collection built around traditional Japanese materials and craft techniques. Presented during London Design Festival 2026, VOID Animism Objects comprises Washi, Aizome and Yakisugi editions, with production limited to 10 sets of each.
The Washi edition uses hand-formed paper made from natural plant fibres by Izumo Mingeishi. The Aizome edition applies traditional Japanese indigo dyeing by Watanabe's to its outer shell. The Yakisugi edition uses surface-charred cedar developed in partnership with Sakamoto Inc., drawing on a woodworking technique in which the cedar surface is charred to improve durability and fire resistance.
Joe Yoshimura of BREND handled product design, while Chiaki Uehira of I/O STUDIO was responsible for acoustic design. Creative direction was by Wataru Kiruta of Art Collective Ochill. Yusuke Mizobata, Masayuki Inoue and Maika Goto of VOID produced the collection.
The loudspeakers were presented at Pick Store in Shoreditch, London, as part of the Animism Objects – Japan Artisans Design exhibition. The project draws inspiration from Japan's San'in region and its artisanal traditions, exploring animism as a relationship between people, nature and objects. Alongside the audio collection, the exhibition featured garments combining Western and Eastern perspectives and mingei folk pottery from the San'in region.
